The one thing that stands out like a beacon after the chaos of the last few weeks is the performance of our health services. As Health Spokesman for the Conservative Group, I have always recognised the superb performance of our health services.

In Stockport, we have all witnessed the dedicated performance of the North West Ambulance Service, fighting their way through snow bound streets to reach patients in need of help. On local television, throughout the North West we have seen how, despite acute difficulties, often aided by Volunteer Mountain Rescue Teams, they have reached their patients and safely transported them to hospital where teams of doctors and nurses were always available after struggling to their posts.

Similarly the work of the midwives, nurses and health visitors continued in spite of the weather and let us not forget the work of our local doctors who helped our Health Centre open even in the most difficult of circumstances. We are very lucky to have such dedicated professionals to serve our community.

During the big freeze, my wife and I were fortunately well stocked up with food, but for about a week we were unable to get a car out because of the snow. However, two things stand out; the spirit of comradeship between our neighbours – offers of support with shopping etc - but also the stirling efforts of postmen, milkmen and paper deliverers who kept services running in trying circumstances.

As we sit comfortably at home considering our troubles over a few inches of snow, our thoughts turn to the other side of the Atlantic where the tragic events in Haiti put our small problems into perspective. Even now some two weeks or so after this tragic event we should give a big vote of thanks to those members of Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service who are over there bringing comfort and assistance to those millions in despair.
