Our green spaces in Stockport are precious. They must be protected so citizens are free to enjoy themselves without stumbling across other people's litter.
Last Saturday in my ward, Heatons North, I, along with my fellow Conservative Councillors, told local residents we would be doing another litter pick, this time on Priestnall Fields. The Fields have often been an eye-sore and bone of contention to locals, with litter ranging from broken glass, plastic bottles and sweet wrappers to 'road closed' signs and various articles of clothing. Local people joined us this weekend and we had a major clean up. At the end of it everyone felt justified in giving themselves a pat on the back for a job well done. Thanks also to 'Paddy' the brown labrador who retrieved many plastic bottles and brought them to me.
The majority of Stockport's citizens are keen to re-cycle whatever they can to keep our Borough clean and tidy. They have pride in the appearance of our Town. Unfortunately not all are able to re-cycle garden waste as they don't have a green wheelie bin. Is it perceived by the controlling Liberal-Democrats that people living in terraced houses don't want a green wheelie bin? I would pose the question: 'have they all been asked?' Some don't have transport, so it is impossible for them to take re-cycling material to the sites. Just how are they supposed to re-cycle? I have found most children anxious to play their part in the re-cycling process. As more people participate in the re-cycling process, it follows our streets will become cleaner. Perhaps no-one will notice the Liberal-Democrats are apparently failing in their duty to clean our streets on a regular basis.
After receiving my 'Thanks for re-electing me in May' leaflet, I've been inundated with telephone calls, e-mails and faxes from residents thanking me for the information on how they can 'Say No to Junk Mail'. At full Council on Thursday the Conservatives will be putting a motion forward on this very subject. There would be less glossy paper littering our streets or in need of re-cycling if it didn't arrive through our letter boxes in increasing volumes on a daily basis. Conservatives listen to residents in our wards, then help them achieve the results they want. Most people definitely want to be rid of this intrusion into their lives.
