Lib Dem Budget - a missed opportunity

Lib Dem Budget – A missed opportunity.

Stockport Council’s ruling Liberal Democrat Group yesterday revealed the details of their Council budget for the next year and confirmed a 3.25% rise in Council Tax.

Cllr Les Jones, Conservative Group Leader said:

“Liberal Democrats have again proved costly for the people of Stockport. It is shocking that they are putting Council Tax up by 3.25% at a time when many Councils are going for a freeze. In ten years the Liberal Democrats have increased the average Band D Stockport Council Tax Bill by over £600 per family.”

“We are in a recession and the Liberal Democrats have decided the Council are to take on more borrowing and more debt which residents will ultimately have to pay back in the longer term.”

“Under the Conservatives, Stockport Council could have had a Council Tax Freeze for the next two years. Likewise, the Conservative proposal could have enabled £6 million over two years to remain in the pockets of Stockport residents to be spent in Stockport’s local shops and economy – providing just the boost we need in difficult times. What a missed opportunity.”
