An Election Message From Stockport Conservatives

The Local Elections are only a week away and, like when the Queen comes to visit and the cracks are disguised with a new coat of paint, there are currently plenty of posters up telling us about the achievements of Liberal Democrat Stockport Council.
Sadly though, a lot of people in Stockport still aren’t being listened to by the Liberal Democrats. We still have see-through plastic bin bags, the condition of our roads and pavements is poor, and we have so many potholes it looks like Stockport maybe heading for a crater crisis on its roads!
People tell us all the time that they don’t wish to drag rubbish in bags through their house, they don’t like the mess and hazard of bags of rubbish lining roadsides up and down Stockport. Unfortunately, the Liberal Democrats still don’t seem to be listening.
Under the Liberal Democrats youth service provision has been cut and older people have also seen cut backs combined with extra charges. Those people who, in retirement, wish to spend time enjoying adult education have seen the Liberal Democrats remove funding from these courses.
Stockport Conservatives want to see our Borough looking cleaner, roads and pavements mended. We would provide additional cleaning stewards, more bins and invest in speeding up pavement and road repairs. Stockport Conservatives want to see investment in young people and older people alike. We have proposed that youth centres are opened more often- giving young people something to do and somewhere to go other than gathering near shops and on the streets. Stockport Conservatives have also pledged to restore funding to over-60s adult education classes. We know that these classes keep both mind and body fit and active in retirement.
You will probably have noticed that your Council Tax Bill has gone up again this year. Under the Liberal Democrats there has been another Council Tax rise and Stockport residents are now paying the third highest Council tax in Greater Manchester. Stockport’s Conservative Councillors know that we can reduce these steep rises each year, we have found an extra £1.3 million savings available throughout the Council. These savings do not affect frontline services and help the Council keep waste and red tape to a minimum. Sadly, the Liberal Democrats do not wish to make the changes that would make so much more available to Stockport residents.
Conservative Councillors work hard for Stockport residents making sure local traffic problems are addressed, getting footpaths, pavements and street lights repaired and working to make local areas safer and cleaner. We can work to improve this Borough, but only a Conservative vote can bring the change we need to make this a better Borough for all Stockport residents.
